The outer shell of the tooth is called enamel. Enamel helps protect teeth from the stresses of daily activities like eating, biting etc. This covering is tough, and in fact, is the hardest tissue in the body. But of course, it is still vulnerable to chipping and cracking. Extreme temperature and other painful stimuli are kept from the teeth by enamel. This shell can get stained by beverages like coffee, tea, juices and wines. Tooth enamel is also stained by smoking. Although there are treatments available for stained enamel, chipped and cracked enamel cannot be repaired.

Why does tooth erosion occur?
The wearing away of enamel can be caused but the action of acid on the teeth. Drinking excessive quantities of soft drinks can cause this to happen. Citric acid and phosphoric acid is contained in high levels in colas and lemon-based beverages. Tooth can be worn away by fruit-based drinks too.

People who suffer from acid reflux disease, in which stomach acids are brought back into the mouth, may also suffer from tooth erosion. Stomach acids like these can be highly corrosive. Persons with a history of xerostomia or dry mouth can have a lower production of saliva in the mouth. Saliva can help wash away acids that can attack tooth enamel. When there is a reduced quantity of saliva production, these acids are free to attack the enamel. Plenty of starchy foods like bread and potatoes that have a high sugar content can also increase the rate of enamel erosion. Certain kinds of medications like antihistamines and aspirin can wear away enamel. A genetic predisposition can cause enamel erosion to occur in some cases.

Treating Tooth Erosion At Home
The best thing you can to treat enamel erosion is to prevent it.
• Rinse your mouth after eating certain foods like tomatoes, lemons and other fruits habitually.

• By eating plenty of raw greens you can counter the effects of tea, coffee, beverages and acidic foods.

• Through straws is the best way to sip colas without swirling it around your mouth. The cola should have as little contact with your teeth as possible.

• Fluoridated toothpaste and fluoridated dental products are good for strengthening your teeth if you use them.

• Swirl a teaspoon of sunflower oil in your mouth every morning before breakfast. The oil should not be swallowed. In a few minutes, you should spit it out. This is a newer remedy for enamel erosion that's catching on. Although any other oils are not recommended, sesame oil seems to work just as well. Oil pulling, as this technique is called, has benefits for your teeth, including strengthening the enamel and preventing erosion.

• Do daily brushing and flossing.

• You should drink lots of water and cut down on snacks.

• Boost saliva production by chewing sugar free gum.

• The biggest fall out of tooth erosion is dental sensitivity. To help you deal with this, use desensitizing toothpaste.

• Placing a small dab of desensitizing toothpaste, and leaving it overnight, on the affected area is a good idea. The next morning, rinse it and repeat for a few weeks. The sensitivity might get less intense, as you might start to notice.
