Generally the orthodontist gives dental wax after your braces are set up. Local pharmacies are also a good source of dental wax. Take a small piece of wax and place it directly on the bracket that is causing irritation. The wax is non-toxic so you should not worry if you swallow a little of it. Long term relief can be got from using dental silicone. dental silicone lasts longer than dental wax. To stick to it though, your braces must be dry. Regular usage of braces makes inside of your cheeks to toughen up. So you may require less amount of wax later.

Your orthodontist will approve you to use fluoride toothpaste and brush. Do not use whitening toothpaste. It is recommended to use angled brush. To remove food particles before you brush you can also use a small spiral dental brush or proxy brush. Using a regular toothbrush at an angle of 45 degrees can effectively clean between the braces and gums. Clean all the parts of teeth and mouth.

In a circular motion, brush thoroughly to remove any plaque. Toothpaste may get deposited between the braces. Brushing around braces should be done with special care. Too much force applied while brushing may change your braces position or even break them. So that you do not have any adverse effect on the braces, use a toothbrush with soft bristles and brush lightly.

The deposit of toothpaste between the braces and teeth can be removed by rinsing the mouth several times. Use the mirror to check any traces of plaque. Sterilize your mouth using mouthwash. Dental flossing can be used to remove any plaque, which is not reachable by a toothbrush. Floss your teeth daily in the evening using waxed floss. Floss between the braces and the teeth.

Remove the floss by rinsing the mouth thoroughly. You don't require special floss for your teeth, although if you want, you can go for different flavors or colors. In essence, any floss, which has a plastic threaded needle, serves the purpose. The plastic threaded needle helps in removing the floss under arch wire for each bracket. Every three months, it is recommended to replace your toothbrush with a new one. This will prevent most problems that come with braces while keeping them clean and hygienic.
